Independent technology consulting

AI and emerging technology strategy — from someone who builds.

I help organisations figure out what to build with AI and emerging technology, then I help them build it. Not theory. Not slides. Working output.

AI Blockchain Digital identity

Plus IoT, robotics, and emerging interfaces where they intersect — same focus as on services.

Dr Alec Burns — Metis Point

One person. Full capability.

You work directly with me. Engagements run on fixed or capped fees, scoped upfront. When I'm done, I leave you stronger and more capable — not dependent on my continued involvement.

Fixed, transparent pricing Every engagement is clearly scoped with a fixed or capped fee from day one. You always know what you're paying.
Senior delivery, every time PhD in Robotics & AI, 10+ patents, a Nature publication. You get the person with the experience — the same person, start to finish.
Capability, not dependency I build your team's understanding alongside the deliverables. You keep the knowledge when I leave.
About

Built, not just studied.

I set up Metis Point because I kept seeing the same pattern: organisations spending serious money on consultants who'd studied AI but never built with it. I've been the person who builds it — and I got tired of watching teams get sold confidence without substance.

My background is hands-on. PhD in Robotics and Autonomous Systems. Head of R&D at a $2B blockchain ecosystem, where I owned the AI strategy, led the research team, and shipped multi-agent systems that cut latency by 60% and costs by 80%. I managed strategic partner relationships with brands including Formula E, ESA, and BCG. Before that, I led product strategy at a blockchain IP firm, authored 10+ patents, and delivered enterprise proofs of concept across identity, compliance, and secure data.

I was the lead inventor on the technology behind AlphaGo (formerly Robotiz3d) — an autonomous road-maintenance robotics company that has since raised millions in funding and continues to operate today. Earlier, I led a 19-person robotics lab at UCL and co-authored a front-cover article in Nature.

Why not a big consultancy?

You don't need a big consultancy. You need the right person.

Large consulting firms charge premium rates for AI strategies built by teams who've never deployed an AI system. Here's how that typically plays out:

What big firms do What I do
Send a partner to win the work, then hand it to juniors You work with me — start to finish
12-week discovery phases before any output Complete strategies and working prototypes in days
Generic frameworks adapted from other clients First-principles thinking built around your organisation
Recommend tools they have partnerships with Vendor-independent — I recommend what actually fits
Leave you with a deck and a dependency Leave you with capability, knowledge, and momentum
Bill by the hour with no ceiling Fixed or capped fees, scoped upfront

Untangling Web3 episode 87 — Tech & Misinformation

I'm the creator and host of Untangling Web3 — one of the largest Web3 and emerging technology podcasts, with over 200,000 subscribers.

Each episode features conversations with industry leaders, founders, and technologists at the cutting edge of blockchain, AI, decentralised systems, and digital infrastructure. It gives me a network and perspective that directly informs my consulting work.

If you want a sense of how I think and who I talk to, this is the best place to start.
